It’s Spaghetti Night!

Alpine Village Family October 23rd, 2007

A wonderful thing dawned on me today. There is a meal in my repertoire that both kids and Hubby and I like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spaghetti!!! Some days it seems like I’ll be making separate meals for all of us for the next 20 years . It’s gets frustrating. Then I remembered that last week Jenn finally ate some spaghetti AND LIKED IT :D. We just kept serving it and finally she ate it too. Perseverance pays off! …boy it really IS the little things in life isn’t it? LOL

How about a Chore Chart - For You?

Alpine Village Family August 17th, 2007

A friend emailed me a couple of days ago to share a GREAT chore chart she had found online. I was SO excited to check it out; my kids need a chore chart badly. I really think it’ll help them to remember what they are expected to do each morning for school - without my reminding them every 30 seconds.
ANYWAY, :D, When the page loaded I realized, GASP, it was a chart for…. me! Specifically, those of us in charge of our homes - cleaning, organizing etc.. I was disappointed at first, just for a second, and then I realized that a lot of moms out there would LOVE a chart to remind them of what to do each day of the week to keep their homes in order ;)
The best part is, it’s really reasonable at only $4 for a year’s worth (if I remember exactly). If you give it a try, please let me know what you think :) It’s at www.motivatedmoms.com

Enjoy :)

If you like to save money and get great tips, read on :)

I have a thing for recipes and money saving ideas and… okay, I suppose I love to read all “tip-related” articles and newsletters. We all have our faults right? LOL!

Each Monday I get my email newsletter from Mommysavers and I love it! It really has a category for everything and anything you might be interested in as a woman. Whether you are a mom or not, a wife or not etc.

The recipes are great but I really like the craft ideas and to-do’s. The older my kids get - and they are 6yrs & 8yrs now, the more I need to think up new ideas ;)

The Amazing Shrinking Mom

Alpine Village Family March 7th, 2007

Reading blogs is so much fun.  Hearing opinions and perspectives from other people is such a great way to expand your own perspective.

The Amazing Shrinking Mom is a blog by Melodee Helms.  There is a post that I really enjoyed entitled “My Back-Stabbing So-Called Friend” that really eloquently puts into words what a lot of people might be feeling.

Pop over and have a read, then come back and post your thoughts.  :)

Kids Want Fun Meals

Alpine Village Family February 12th, 2007

If you’ve got kids you know the challenge it is to make something fun and interesting for lunch instead of the same ol’ thing.  How many times have we made grilled cheese sandwiches as moms?  Oh too many times for me to count!

Christine Steendahl has a great menu planner for kid’s breakfast and dinners that the kids will love.  Get it here: http://www.KidApprovedMeals.com

Ever Thought Of Going Vegan?

Alpine Village Family February 9th, 2007

Or maybe you’d just like to get some great recipes for healthy meals and snacks….

It’s hard to eat healthy when you’re busy with kids, housecleaning, cooking, working, taking care of hubby and fitting some time in for yourself too!

Vegan Family Living is a site that offers advice, recipes and an email list for those interested in learning more about being a Vegan or just living a healthy lifestyle.  A neat feature of this site is that you can comment on any of the recipes or topics that the owner, LaTara Ham-Ying, has written about.

Alpine Village Family January 11th, 2007

Tired of looking through recipe sites that call for a cup of white sugar, cup of white flour, a box of processed cheese and a cup of lard? If you’re doing your best to have a whole foods diet, you need healthy recipes.

These feature whole grains, lots of veggies and fruit, and even the occasional sweet - with an emphasis on natural foods.

I want a frugal gourmet in my kitchen

Alpine Village Family January 8th, 2007

Have you ever wished you could have a professional chef looking over your shoulder in the kitchen? I know I have. I think the only thing I remember from cooking under my Mother’s tutelage is how to make a white sauce… useful, but most certainly incomplete.

Now you can have a chef right there with you. Chef Michele shares cooking tips, cookbook reviews, recipes, and how to eat well on a budget on her blog.

Bon appetit!

What do I feed this kid?

Alpine Village Family January 5th, 2007

Do you have a toddler? Do you find it challenging coming up with interesting snacks (and the ubiquitous PB & J is getting tiresome)?

It was so much easier when they were babies, but now that they’re up and running, it seems some days they subsist on the cat’s food, chewing gum and spit!

If you need a little help, visit Snacks for Toddlers and get inspired with yummy, healthy and good looking food ideas for the little ones. None of it involves defrosting frozen fish sticks, I promise. :)

Family Resolution – Agree to Set Healthier Habits this New Year

Alpine Village Family January 4th, 2007

Whether intentional or not, generational traits are passed down from parents to children.  If mom and dad live a fairly healthy lifestyle, odds are much greater that the children will follow suit.

If the head of the household believes being on a diet means skipping the super size fries and adding extra lettuce to the fast food burger, we can see the outlook that the children will hold.

There is no time like the present to turn the sinking ship around.  New Years is the perfect time to make a family resolution – agree to set healthier habits.  One can’t do it without the support of others, so the entire family might as well jump on board.

The easiest change a family can start with is in food consumption. Obviously you’ll need to incorporate exercise into the habits; however starting with food is a small step with measurable results. Simply do not bring junk food into the house.  If you have chips, sodas and ice cream available, would you really be able to just have some grapes?  More than anything you will need a change of mindset.

Sit down at the table as a family and get input from everyone.  Talk about the health risks, talk about wanting to be around for the children for years to come.  Make an agreement that there will be no closet eating.  Agree to look for creative recipes so that it doesn’t seem like you’re eating rabbit food.

Forcing or demanding healthier habits is formula for failure.  If you can make other family members feel that they are part of the decision and truly understand the importance of it, positive results will be easier to achieve.

Hold each other accountable.  Give son permission to question mom why she’s eating a donut.  Agree to support, not ridicule.  Accept digressions as temporary set backs, not failures.  Agree that failure is not an option.  Keep on keeping on.
