Disney? No thanks.

Alpine Village Family November 20th, 2008

I really don’t get too excited about Disney vacations but I know a lot of friends who do. I think it’s because I’m not too big into rides and such. I don’t really have a desire to go to Canada’s Wonderland so why would I want to spend big bucks going to Disney? What I’d love to do is maybe try one of the Disney cruises. I hear those are great and the kids can have a blast at the day camps while mom and dad get a bit of a break too ;) win- win

Toy shopping

Alpine Village Family November 15th, 2008

I feel like I just shopped for Christmas and here I am doing it again. I do enjoy it a little anyway. Shopping for some people is fun. I just find that shopping for the kids can be tough because there is always something on the list that I just can’t find or get a hold of no matter how hard I try. Last year I bought the kids two remote control helicopters and they had a lot of fun with them. This year I’m not sure what our fun thing will be - maybe a board game??? I’d better get figuring it out.

I’m thinking of Christmas gifts already.

Alpine Village Family November 4th, 2008

I like the idea of personalized gifts for kids. You know, like blankets with their names or those cute teddy bears with names on the dress… so cute for the little ones on the list :) . As for the big kids on the list… I tend to just ask them what they want or give them money ;) I really liked getting money as a kid and I’ve never ever heard a kid complain when they open a card to find money inside ;)

Renting a hotel room w the kids for the pool

Alpine Village Family July 6th, 2008

We have a hotel here where i live that has a really nice pool. It has a water slide and the whole nine yards. So I’m thinking of looking up some hotel deals and seeing if I can get a deal on staying there with the kids.

It would just be an overnighter but I think the kids would LOVE it and, even though we’d still be in our own city, it would feel like a getaway for me too ;)

Personal Gifts For Baby

Alpine Village Family January 10th, 2008

If you want to make a special gift even more endearing, try having your baby gifts personalized. Traditional items, such as silver baby spoons and bronzed baby shoes are commonly engraved with the baby’s name and date of birth, but there are other items, such as blankets, pillows, and frames that can be personalized as well. When you think about it, anything can be personalized, even the furniture! The only limitation is your imagination.

Personalized baby clothes are also popular. While personalizing small children’s clothes is generally discouraged due to the possibility of predators learning the child’s name, personalized baby clothes may be safely given and enjoyed. Baby gifts personalized by the giver rather than ordered with the baby’s name already applied generally fall into the categories of clothes or blankets, as simple personalization is fairly easy on fabric.

Porcelain baby booties are highly popular baby gifts, personalized with the baby’s name, birth date and perhaps parents’ names as well. These baby booties are usually hand painted and quite striking, and you can order porcelain baby booties from a wide variety of internet stores.

Silver has always been considered a traditional baby gift. Silver spoons, frames, and cups look so elegant with the baby’s name, date of birth, and birth weight engraved on the silver baby gift. Elegance needn’t come with a hefty price tag either. If you can’t afford real silver, another option might be sterling silver, silver plate or stainless steel.

Most of the time, purchasers have baby gifts personalized by the store where the gift is purchased. However, this is not always necessary. If you wish to have baby gifts personalized after purchase, you have a couple of options. If the item is simple or you are crafty, personalizing the gift yourself is meaningful and beautiful.

For difficult items or if you do not feel comfortable doing the work yourself, having baby gifts personalized by a professional is possible. Fine jewelry stores generally have a jeweler on staff that can perform fine engraving work, allowing you to have already purchased silver baby gifts personalized. A good seamstress can personalize virtually any fabric item through embroidery or other techniques. A decorative painter who is familiar with ceramics can personalize a porcelain item.

While the concept is not new, having baby gifts personalized is still one of the most thoughtful gifts new parents can receive. Whether it’s a photo blanket or silver baby spoons, personalizing makes the gift that much more of a treasure and keepsake.

Gift Card Q & A

Alpine Village Family January 3rd, 2008

Gift cards have become a great way to give someone a gift. This is especially true if you do not know what the person likes or wants. Some people are hard to buy a present for. They seem to always purchase the things they want beforehand. Gift cards are also a great way to give children a card that teaches them responsibility. Think of it has a present or gift that is perfect for just about any occasion and does not come with the hassle of sorting through the shelves at your local store to find that gift that he or she may not actually enjoy. This lets the recipient pick out what they want and when they want it. If you are unsure about what is a gift card, what types there are and just how to use them, then this article is for you. We will cover the basics of the gift card world and even tackle some of the etiquette questions that might arise.

What types of stores have gift cards?

Most popular stores and outlets offer the ability to purchase a gift card. There are also restaurants that offer gift cards. In recent years many online websites also have gift cards to purchase and you can redeem some gift cards at a variety of places. If you are unsure of a store have gift cards available, ask managers to help you. At that time you can also find out if there are other stores within the same network that accept the same gift card.

Where can I use a prepaid gift card?

You can use a prepaid gift card, whether a regular gift card from a store or a prepaid credit card, anywhere that you want. If the card is from a particular store then you must use it to purchase items there. If it is a prepaid credit card then you can use it wherever the logo on the front, such as Visa or Mastercard, is accepted.

Can I get my recipient’s name put on the gift card?

Most store gift cards do not allow you to put the recipient’s name on the card. If you opt for a prepaid credit card then the person can elect to put their name on the front. This helps ensure that if it were lost or stolen, the person would not be held liable for fraudulent charges. There is usually a form to fill out but there is not a credit check.

What do I do if I lose my prepaid gift card?

If you have a prepaid credit card/gift card then the issuing company will replace the card for usually no additional charges. Many also offer protections against fraudulent purchases if you let them know the minute, or as soon as possible, that you have lost your card. Regular gift cards are the responsibility of the owner and the issuing store will not refund your card should you happen to lose it. This is why many people are choosing to give prepaid credit cards as gift cards as an extra means of security.

Can I add money to a gift card that someone else has given me?

That is the great thing about gift cards. Unlike gift certificates, a gift card can be reused. If you run low on funds and you know that you will shop there often, add money to the card. Gift cards can be a great way to control your budget by letting you know exactly how much you can spend in a given month on certain purchases.

Simple Toys

Alpine Village Family December 16th, 2007

In the world of toys, there is a battle raging: technology versus back to basics toys. On one side, we have the people who say it is best to start a child learning how to use today’s technology as soon as possible. On the other hand, we have the people who say classic baby toys are best and help to foster imagination and creativity. The latter group believes that today’s high tech toys do too much for the kids and that there is very little imagination involved.

Back to basics toys are also called “active” toys. These toys require the child to make up their own games. Classic baby toys include building block, toy cars and trucks, dolls and puzzles, toys that don’t have a computer chip in them to guide the child through a game by “talking” or moving automatically. These automated toys are also referred to as “passive” toys, because the child doesn’t have to do anything except press a button to make the toys work.

Examples of classic baby toys are many and varied. Building blocks and ride-on toys have been around for generations. Any toy that simulates household activities is classic and appropriate, such as a toy cooking set, toy tools or toy shopping cart. Music making devices such as toy pianos or guitars are also highly popular toys that help spark the imagination and are considered back to basics toys. Animal related toys such as play farms or animal sound machines are also excellent classic baby toys. Some form of fort, tunnel or other climbing and crawling spot is highly recommended as well.

When selecting back to basics toys, it is wise to consider the message that is being conveyed. For example, toy guns are highly popular classics. Many parents feel that there is nothing wrong with this, while others feel that toy guns send the message that gun violence is acceptable. If you are buying the toy for a child that is not your own, make sure that you get the parents’ approval prior to purchasing any violence-oriented toy.

Along the same lines, it has always been the tradition to purchase baby boy gifts or baby girl gifts. Baby boy gifts fit the traditional masculine profile, such as guns and trucks and hammers, while baby girl gifts accentuated the traditional female roles with dolls, cooking equipment and housekeeping toys. Many parents are now against following those gender lines, eschewing baby boy gifts and baby girl gifts in favor of more gender-neutral presents. Others take the opposite approach, encouraging their boys to play with traditional “girl toys” and daughters to play with “boy toys.” When purchasing baby gifts, be sure that you are sensitive to the parents’ wishes in this regard.

Whether the child uses back to basics toys or the high-tech toys is up to the parents. There is no definitive answer. The best way is probably one where you balance out the two options. While it is important for today’s children to familiarize themselves with modern technology, we have to remember that there is no replacement for an active imagination.

The Kids Are Away For The Weekend

Alpine Village Family November 23rd, 2007

Hubby, God bless him, took the kids to the cottage for the weekend again. Leaving Mommy home to relax and enjoy some much needed alone time ;)

While I know that I should only be happy I do feel guilty too - especially while I watched him pack up the luggage and sooooo much more into the truck.

Nevertheless, here I am, relaxing and enjoying some wine. I guess I’d better just enjoy the time while I have it instead pouting it away with guilt :) .

Socks Are Fun!

Alpine Village Family October 16th, 2007

Do you like to have fun when you dress? Maybe a cute little broach, seasonal earrings or some fun socks? Now I don’t mean crazy socks that have toes with faces on them LOL!. Just fun but practical too :).

I love little surprise accessories, and socks fit the bill perfectly. Something you have to wear anyway (hey I’m in Canada and our winters are chilly so, yes, socks are a must) might as well be comfy and fun too right?! I have a thing for knee highs (they’re warm ;) ) and these are fun without being too crazy ;).

Check out these hue socks. They can take a boring outfit and make it fun with a little surprise of color! They have socks, tights, knee hi’s, leggings AND accessories too. One stop shopping :) Gotta love that.

I’m Still Shopping!

Alpine Village Family September 22nd, 2007

I can’t help but wonder if it will be possible for me to do almost all of my holiday shopping online this year. It’s really the way to do it. I certainly won’t miss waiting in line behind 12 people, one of whom has forgotten to shower , for 25 minutes at every store - no way!

While doing my daily browsing I came across a store that sells electronics and much more. They carry pretty much everything related to large and small appliances, TVs, cameras, computers, all the way to furniture and even garbage compactor bags ;). Now that’s thorough! To top it all off, they even have free shipping available on most items :) Ahhh…. online shopping rocks!
