Tummy tuck or family vacation???

Alpine Village Family December 10th, 2007

I’m having a serious dilemma that’s making me feel pretty darn guilty for even pondering my options. You see, I had been planning to have a tummy tuck in February or March of 2008. I had it all figured out time-wise and money-wise too and I reallyy, reallyyyyy, reallllllllllyyyyyyyy want one since my two kids did a number on me ;)

Anyway, now I have a new full time job and I’ll only get 2 weeks vacation this year - one in the summer and one in the Fall. What I’m wondering though, is whether my boss would be okay with me taking a 2 week, unpaid leave of absence this Spring.

The problem is, Hubby says that if I can get a leave I should be spending it with my kids and NOT recovering from plastic surgery
.

My issue is that I’ve spent the last 8 years spending EVERY day of my life with them. I don’t see why it will make such a bad person to do this thing for myself that I have been wishing and hoping for for the last 3 or more years. What do you think? Am I a bad Mommy??

The malls in Florida are pretty cool!

Alpine Village Family December 10th, 2007

Okay, you’re right, I can’t really speak for the entire state of Florida BUT the mini mall by my mother-in-law’s place was pretty darn cool.

Where else can you see a listing of stores as diverse as a Bulk store, jewelery store, kids’ clothing store and one with a sign showing ” rhinoplasty Naples “? I guess it’s just in case you feel like you need a big bag of Swedish Berries before you get your nose job ;) . Either way, I’ve just not seen a store grouping like that in Canada :)

Mind you, we do have a mall by my house that has a Jenny Craig Weight Loss Center AND a Quizno’s sub place side by side - that always makes me smile :D . And, you can bet that some of us (yes, I’m a die-hard Jenny Craig member), go weigh in at Jenny Craig and then go straight to Quizno’s for lunch - or maybe that’s just me LOL :D

Hey, did you hear the one about…

Alpine Village Family December 10th, 2007

I have a thing for laughter :) Sometimes I feel like I need it like I need air. I find it can help me out of the worst, most dire mood in the snap of a finger - especially if the joke comes from the dimpled face of someone special I care about.

From the cute “knock-knock” jokes from a toddler to the standard ones like this ” Hey did you hear the one about the New York cosmetic surgeon?” I like them all in as large of an amount as possible.

I think that’s why comedy shows are so popular. Most people do love a good sit com at some point in their week. But, offer up an entire hour and a half of their favorite comedian, like Dane Cook (a favorite of mine), and people will pay a lot of money - I know I did! :D

Are boys more difficult to potty train?

Alpine Village Family December 10th, 2007

Have you heard that rumour? The one that says that potty training boys is so much tougher than potty training girls. What are your thoughts on it?

Personally I found both of my kids to be pretty much the same. Though I think Jenn was a little bit easier than Matt, I don’t think it was because she is a girl. I’m pretty sure it was because she had a lot of support from her big brother AND she wanted to pee on the potty just like he did ;) . Well, not EXACTLY like he did ;) . Since he was standing LOL!

So, are girls easier to train? Well, not at my house they weren’t LOL. I’d say I’m more on the camp that says that second and third kids are easier because they can watch and mimic their older siblings - whether they sit or stand to pee :D

Children’s Sleep Issues

Alpine Village Family December 9th, 2007

Sleep is important to a child’s wellbeing because the body produces more of the hormone that stimulates growth during the night. Recent research has shown that children of all ages are not getting enough sleep and that can result in poor school achievement and behavioral problems. In this article, we’ll explore common sleep problems in children and detail techniques that you can use to help your child sleep better.

New parents are often very concerned about how much sleep their baby is getting. Newborn infants have irregular sleep cycles and sleep an average of 16 to 17 hours per day. However, they may only sleep 1 or 2 hours at a time. As children get older, the total number of hours they need for sleep decreases. A pre-school child may still need to sleep 10 to 12 hours each day, whereas a school aged child sleeps about 10 hours each day. It is important to remember that each child’s sleeping pattern will be different.

It is well known that a child who has a sleep problem will also develop behavioral and attention problems in school. A recent study reported that 37% of school aged children experience significant, nocturnal sleeping issues. Problems may include a reluctance to go to sleep, disrupted sleep, nightmares and sleepwalking. In older children, bedwetting can also become a challenge. Sleep problems are also common in kids with ADHD. It is important to try and figure out if these issues, especially if your child has difficulty falling asleep, are a side effect of any ADHD medication he or she might be taking.

To avoid sleep problems in children, it is important that you help your child develop good sleeping habits at an early age. A regular routine will help them understand that it will soon be time to go to sleep. Make sure there is a quiet period before bedtime and make it the same time every night. His or her sleep patterns will adjust accordingly. Allow your child to take a favorite teddy bear, toy, or special blanket to bed each night. Such comforting objects often help children fall peacefully into a deep slumber. Try to avoid letting your child sleep with you. This will only make it harder for him to learn to settle himself and fall asleep when he is alone.

Sleep problems in children can be a learned behavior. If you have a family of night owls, then there might be a connection to your child’s bad sleeping habits. If you’re really concerned, then visit a sleep disorder center - especially if you suspect that depression or other anxiety disorders may be behind your child’s sleepless nights. It’s important to remember that different people need different amounts of sleep at different ages. If your child is not tired during the day, then don’t worry! Sometimes a simple bout of insomnia is nothing to lose sleep over.

ACK! I’m going through a tunnel!

Alpine Village Family December 8th, 2007

I do like to talk on my cell phone. When I’m meeting friends or have to double check on something I really find it handy. Except when I’m at a store - cause I hate it when other people can hear what I’m talking about - but in the van when I’m not driving yet.

Anyway, I also find them handy when I’m phoning someone who’s out and about. My pet peeve though is when they lose signal when we are right in the middle of a conversation. Hmmm… maybe a cell phone booster is a good gift idea for those people! :D

Are Real Estate Agents All Rich?

Alpine Village Family December 7th, 2007

I keep wondering if, given how high the commission fees are for a real estate agent, they are all very well off financially. Okay, well maybe not ALL of them LOL!! But, certainly those who manage to sell even 5 houses a year must do okay. I guess the trick is to be the lucky agent who sells at least 5 house - and if they don’t do that, they’re in trouble. BUT to be one of the lucky ones and sell several, high value homes… well THAT would mean being very well off thanks!

The thing is though, I’ve never really seen someone who was very well off financially, and then found out later that the person was a real estate agent. I just can’t figure out why…

If Only Men Could Live 28 Days As A Woman!

Alpine Village Family December 6th, 2007

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you’re going squirrely?? I know it could be worse. I could have a migraine or the flu - still it’s a tough day. And, yes, I cope with food LOL! :D

I’m about to go out and devour a double cheeseburger with mayo and a large order of fries - YUM!!

This day is not really exceptional in any way I guess. It’s probably just hormones ;) Darn hormones! Do you ever just wish that the men in your life could experience 28 days as a woman? I do :) I think then they would be so much more understanding when we are crying over commercials and stuffing our faces with chocolate and cheeseburgers!! :D

What Room In Your House Would You Redo?

Alpine Village Family December 4th, 2007

Personally I have a thing for bathrooms. I like them to look really nice, clean and updated.

I’ve heard it said that bathrooms are very important because they are the only rooms in your house where people are all alone to snoop around and look closely at every little item. So… it makes sense that having them look good would be important.

Let’s face it, we’ve all been to houses and been appalled to find dirty bathroom vanities or toilets with messy seats - ICK!

So, if you could redo any room in your house, which room would you pick? What room in your house needs it the most and why?

Body Fat Answers

Alpine Village Family December 1st, 2007

Body fat is a part of the body that seems to interest almost everybody. For some, it is a topic of humor. For others, it is an obsession. Fat is part of everyone’s anatomy, but takes on a higher level of significance to certain people. The following is a brief discussion of questions and answers about body fat. We will try to describe what body fat is, why we have it, and how it can affect our bodies, both positively and negatively.

I’m not so sure that I know what body fat actually is. Can you give me an accurate definition?

Body fat is nothing more than extremely loose tissue made up of adiposities, and it is a connective tissue. Body fat’s main role is to store energy. It can also cushion and insulate the body. Two main types of fat exist in mammals. One is white adipose tissue and the other is brown adipose tissue. Fatty tissue is usually located beneath the skin, but fat can also surround internal organs to provide adequate padding. The resourcefulness of body fat is exemplified by the fact that it can also provide high levels of nutrients to the body. It is helpful to think of it as an important reserve of nutrients often used by the body.

So, is a large stomach unhealthy?

Without a doubt. You do not want to have excess amounts of fat anywhere on your body. A person who is in good health will have the minimal amount of body fat required for their size. A belly that is larger than it ought to be is indeed a health risk. It is actually more of a health risk than excess fat carried in other parts of the body, such as the buttocks or thighs. Fat centered around the abdomen tends to lead to a higher risk of high blood pressure. You can also expect to be diagnosed with high cholesterol if you are carrying too much weight around your stomach. It is such an issue that some doctors suggest we study the circumference of people’s stomachs rather than their overall body weight.

I’ve heard that it’s possible to measure your own body fat at home. Is this true?

Yes. If you own a body fat scale, you can quickly determine if you have more fat than you need. This type of scale uses something called the Bioelectrical Impedance method to measure the percentage of body fat. It sounds fancy, but here is what happens: A very low-level current passes through your body. Your body’s opposition to the current determines what percentage of fat your body has. This information combines with info regarding your weight and additional factors to calculate your overall body fat percentage. Unfortunately, though, your impedance level can be swayed by the amount of water you drink or your body’s temperature. Not eating or drinking for 4 hours before your test will help solve this problem.

What role does genetics play in a person’s level of body fat?

Unfortunately, those who struggle to keep off high levels of body fat are sometimes genetically inclined to do so. Research has shown a definitive correlation between cases of excess body fat and family members who share the same problem. The simple truth is that if your parents or grandparents were obese or even larger than they should have been, you are more likely to have issues regarding fat. Even more surprisingly, appetite seems to be genetically determined. What we eat and how much we eat is often similar to the diets of our family members. One additional factor affected by genetics is the body’s ability to metabolize food. This affects how our body responds to fatty foods. While it is true that genetics matter, they should not be an excuse for neglecting responsibility when it comes to one’s health.

How can fitness decrease body fat?

One of the most appealing aspects of continual fitness is that it helps burn fat. Quite simply, physical fitness is your greatest ally as you attempt to reduce excess body fat. The formula is one that you have heard before, yet it remains difficult to live by: burn more calories than you consume and you will decrease your body fat. It really is that simple. Some diets try to persuade you to just lessen your caloric intake, but this is hardly enough. You stand a much better chance of maintaining a healthy amount of calories - and hence, body fat - if you aim to burn more calories than you ingest. Exercise is paramount to caloric reduction. Finding the will and the way to do it is the hard part, but you can do it.
