Why Is Being Organized A Bad Thing?

Alpine Village Family November 27th, 2007

I was watching a TV show called, CSI, a couple of nights ago. On it they investigate murders etc. I find it interesting to watch because it’s always a mystery that gets solved at the end of the show - and I really like mysteries.

There was a quirk to this one though in that, when they were describing a person, they mentioned how tidy his garage was (a place for everything, and everything in its place) like it made the man some kind of weirdo  . Personally I like things tidy too, and I’d hate to think that my fondness of tool storage, would make me “odd”… there are plenty of other reasons for THAT LOL!!!

Colic Advice

Alpine Village Family November 24th, 2007

As adults, we often take digestive functions for granted, unless a spicy burrito sends us running for the TUMS or Alkaseltzer. For newborn infants, feeding isn’t as simple. Their systems aren’t fully formed to digest the complex sugars that are found in milk and they’re often filled with too much gas. As parents, there’s very little we can do during these colic crying fits, but there are several products on the market to help with colic relief. Understand that after four months, most babies grow out of this stage and it’s not your fault.

During feeding, many babies accidentally suck in too much air, resulting in “gas pockets” in the stomach and intestines. Also, gas-producing vegetables, like broccoli and cabbage, can pass on their effects through breast milk, causing excess bloating in the baby as well. Toxins like caffeine are easily transmitted this way too, making it difficult for the baby to digest. The more the colicky baby cries, the more the gas builds up and more cramping ensues from tensing the stomach muscles. To ease the baby’s discomfort, many people turn to homeopathic medicines to treat colic.

Newborn babies have a deficiency of the lactase enzyme needed to digest milk sugar (also known as lactose), which means that undigested lactose must be broken down by the intestines and bowels, leading to an overproduction of lactic acid and hydrogen gas. Transient lactase deficiency may be something that causes colic, since this enzyme fully develops around 3-4 months (when most cases of infant colic stop). Colief Infant Drops can provide homeopathic colic relief for the baby with digestive troubles. This food supplement contains Lactase to help the baby break down the Lactose in milk. Just two drops in a bottle or on a spoon (for breast-feeders) can help ease colic caused by feeding too fast or not digesting properly. While this is perfectly safe for babies, note that it will likely give your infant a runny diaper.

Do you suspect that your baby is hypersensitive to lights and sounds? Is bedtime always a nightmare for you? Slumber Sounds offers a “complete colic relief kit” that includes: Baby Bliss gripe water, lullaby and heartbeat baby music CD, and fennel and chamomile baby bath oils. Bathing your baby in essential oils before bed and putting on a soothing CD can sometimes lull a colicky baby right to sleep. The gripe water should be used for colic relief around feeding time, which is another ideal time to encourage your baby to sleep restfully. Maybe you can even sneak in a nap!

The Kids Are Away For The Weekend

Alpine Village Family November 23rd, 2007

Hubby, God bless him, took the kids to the cottage for the weekend again. Leaving Mommy home to relax and enjoy some much needed alone time ;)

While I know that I should only be happy I do feel guilty too - especially while I watched him pack up the luggage and sooooo much more into the truck.

Nevertheless, here I am, relaxing and enjoying some wine. I guess I’d better just enjoy the time while I have it instead pouting it away with guilt :) .

Ask And Ye Shall Receive

Alpine Village Family November 21st, 2007

A week ago I announced to my girlfriends that I’d decided to get a job. I asked them to remember me if they heard of anything and left it at that. Really, with Jenn being in school full time now, it’s time for me to get a job outside the home. I’ll still do my online stuff too but a steady, for-sure income sounds great.

So, fast forward a week and, in the span on the past 7 days, word got passed that I was looking, I was sent a job opportunity, I made up a resume and submitted it for that job opp., I got an interview, and today I was offered a job… a good paying job too I might add :)

Now I just have to decide whether to spend my day tomorrow in front of the plasma mount TV or in a bubble bath ;) . Might as well relax - I start on Monday!

I Lost My Debit Card - Again!!

Alpine Village Family November 20th, 2007

I hate to admit that it’s happened more than once, but it has. There I am in a drive-thru line (yes, usually for McDonald’s breakfast) and I realize I don’t have my debit card  .

I look all over for it; secretly wish there was some sort of GPS system for remotes and debit cards; wonder what store I must have left it in; wonder if it’s fallen out in the van somewhere… and then it hits me - I put it in my coat pocket at some point to avoid carrying my purse - darnit!!

Yeah, it happened again today. And, no, I did NOT like having to go home to fetch my card and go back for my delicious egg mcmuffin ;); no, I didn’t like it, but I did it ;)

Adoption Issues

Alpine Village Family November 17th, 2007

Most adults face the question from inquisitive relatives or friends regarding when, if ever, they intend to have children. Society expects that healthy adults propagate the species. It is Darwinism at its finest but some adults are faced with a conundrum when it comes to biologically reproducing a child from their own loins. For some it is a matter of whether or not they are able to have a child. Some may not wish to be in a relationship just for the sole opportunity of being a parent. Some are in a same-sex relationship and do not wish to give birth. Others may feel that there are far too many unloved children in the world and that they would be adding to this problem by ignoring the children already in the world in favor of giving birth to a child. Child adoption is a solution many adults are turning to when it comes time to have children. Recent tabloids have shown famous celebrities adopting children instead of procreating. Adoption is not an easy choice, nor is it an easy road to take but it is worth the journey. This is especially true if it saves a child’s life. In this article we will address some of the more common questions that arise concerning adoption.

Can I adopt from other countries?

Yes, it is possible to adopt from foreign countries but you must know the laws concerning child adoption. The laws do not just apply to the country in which you want to adopt. They must also be followed for the country in which you are residing. You will have to go through an adoption agency or use an attorney who specializes in adoption in foreign countries. You should plan for there to be a lengthy waiting period and adoption process before the child adoption is complete. It will also be expensive as most foreign countries will require you make a certain number of visits before allowing the child to leave the border.

Should I be a foster parent before adopting?

If you are looking to adopt a child from a foreign country you will not have this option of fostering the child before deciding to adopt. In the United States there is a great shortage of foster parents and an overabundance of children in the foster system. Being a foster parent takes a special person because there will be special needs children placed in the home at times. Is it a good idea to try parenting out before adopting? Yes and no. Most first time parents do not have a “trial” run before having children so you do not need to test-run the parenting process before signing up to be a parent. Children in the foster system often come from broken homes where abuse may have run rampant. These circumstances can often cause psychological and physical damage to the child. The foster parent must be trained to deal with these issues.

What happens if the natural parent(s) later want the child back?

In a perfect world there would be no need for adoption because every child would have parents who loved them and were living. This is not a perfect world nor is it even close to being one. There have been cases where a child was put up for adoption, and even living with the adoptive parents for many years, when the biological parent(s) decide they want the child back. In instances where the biological mother signed her rights away and placed the child up for adoption citing that she did not know who the biological father was, only to have the father reappear at a later date demanding custody be turned over to him, the law has been forced to side with the biological father. This is a very real fear for parents looking to adopt from their home residence. Many adults feel that by adopting a child from a foreign country that the risk is considerably less of the biological family demanding the child be returned.

What are the laws for same sex couples who wish to adopt?

Same sex couples face many difficulties when choosing to adopt. They face not only the fact that many states do not recognize same sex unions but also have adoption laws barring same sex couples from adopting. The same laws often apply to same sex couples looking to adopt children from a foreign country. Many same sex couples elect to adopt a child by having one parent adopt and then later the second partner adopting that same child. It can seem confusing but is essentially the same as one partner giving birth and the other partner then adopting the child. States such as Utah and Florida have the toughest adoption laws for single and same sex couples.

How long is the adoption process?

This is a very difficult question to answer because there are so many variables that can effect how long it actually takes to finalize the adoption process. If the birth parents have signed away their rights and the adoptive parents have met all the requirements and studies, the adoption process can take weeks. If there are problems locating one of the birth parents or the child is from a foreign country, the adoption process can take months to finalize.

I Keep Wanting To “Flip That House”

Alpine Village Family November 16th, 2007

I have a confession… well maybe you already know about it but… I LOVE reality TV :)

From Survivor to game shows to the real estate shows like Flip That House. The real estate shows speak to me especially though. Must be the entrepreneur in me that thinks “man that looks like a pretty challenging but fun time and there’s money to be made big time.”

Next thing I know I”m off into lala land thinking about my own real estate franchise and how many houses I’d have to “flip” before I could pay cash for my house. Yes, I know I’m silly :)

I Jogged And Lived To Tell About It

Alpine Village Family November 16th, 2007

I’ve always thought it was soooo cool to jog. I’d see all the cool people out with their outfits on, jogging away, looking so fit and trendy and think “hmmmm, that would be cool but I think I’d pass out after one block” LOL!!

Don’t get me wrong though, I love to do cardio and I enjoy the treadmill and the ellipticals a lot (especially when I could work out AND watch TV at the same time ;) ). But to jog? Nope.

Then recently my girlfriends started up at it and have been telling me how great it is. So… yes, you know I HAD to try it too :D . I was sooo surprised to get as far as I did (maybe two miles) before I needed a break. I’ve been doing it every day since and I’m loving it. I’ll keep you posted on how long I stick at it but so far so good :)

Baby Shower Ideas

Alpine Village Family November 10th, 2007

If you want to do something different and offer a personalized baby shower, why not try a welcoming shower instead? A welcoming baby shower is one where the shower is held after the birth rather than during the mother-to-be’s pregnancy. There are many unique baby gift ideas out there made even more special with a personalized baby shower that allows gifts with the baby’s name and date of birth added to them.

A personalized baby shower can have a theme that revolves around a scrapbook for the parents-to-be. This is a great baby shower idea that involves lots of guest participation. Invite relatives and guests to bring photos and share their memories to create a scrapbook.

A lasting keepsake with a baby’s name and date of birth make a unique baby gift. Many retailers on the internet offer blankets and pillows woven with a photograph of the baby in the material. Furniture and jewelry are also popular choices, as are stuffed toys, silver frames and tiny spoons and bowls. Almost any item can be turned into personalized baby shower gifts.

Take the personalized baby shower theme on the road and have everyone meet at a paint-your-own pottery studio. The new family and guests can each make a special piece such as a plate, cookie jar, or commemorative item. The guests will love to participate in this baby shower idea. Any of these items will make a unique baby gift. When their creations are done, the guests present the family with a personalized baby shower gift, a complete set of custom baby dinnerware, and lots of smiles.

The new mother might live far away from most of her friends and relatives in a new area, making a personalized baby shower seem impossible. With today’s electronic age, here’s a great baby shower idea: A video baby shower event could be the perfect answer for a touching time between friends. Friends and family can get together to show off their gifts and give a special message in front of the video camera. Gifts can be mailed afterwards, and the video tape as well.

The personalized baby shower will never go out of style. Finding the right touch is easy, as nothing can be more personal than hosting a celebration for a loved one or friend. The new mother will appreciate the efforts and that people care about her enough to throw a party in honor of her baby.

Healthy Kids Really Are Miracles

Alpine Village Family November 5th, 2007

I remember back in University sitting in a Psychology class about child development and thinking “oh God, look at all the things that can go wrong!!”. Everything from preemies with cerebral palsy to boys with an extra “Y” chromosome … scary stuff!! It really did scare me a lot.

Not enough to not take the gamble and have kids myself (obviously), but certainly enough to realize that healthy children really are something to celebrate and be thankful for. Every now and then I linger a bit longer at their bedside and thank God - on my behalf and theirs too ;)
