Mom, Are You Blogging?

Alpine Village Family March 25th, 2007

Mom, have you thought about blogging?  It’s easy to try:

Simply go to Blogger.com; register; enter the requested information; title your blog; choose a template; and begin posting. It’s that simple.

Once you have your feet wet - and fall in love with the act of blogging and the great interaction that often comes with it with people commenting on your posts and all that, you may choose to pick up your own domain name and move your blog to it’s own address.

This blog you are reading now is actually seeking out a few Family Bloggers.  If you’d like to contribute blog posts to our blog, post a comment here and let us know!

Book Loving Family

Alpine Village Family March 25th, 2007

Reading to your children is so important but did you know that you can even read to babies in the womb?  Even as babies; the sounds and connotations in your voice can calm and soothe them.  Research has suggested that these children tend to have a higher degree of understanding and learning later.

Most of us can remember the first book we ever read.  Words are so powerful.  They create images of far away lands; castles and princesses looking for their knights in shining armor.

I loved to read as a child and I believe I received that gift from my father.  I don’t know for sure that he read to me when I was little, I don’t remember back that far - but I have fond memories of spending relaxing Saturday’s with my Dad, both of us enjoying a good book all the way up into my teens.

Gotta Love Suze Orman

Alpine Village Family March 9th, 2007

Last night I happened to catch a PBS special of Suze Orman, about Women and Money.  I just love watching the Suze Orman show when I can catch it and her show last night was Suze on stage talking to about 30,000 about their relationship with money.

It was awesome.  I’ve never heard Suze’s story before either and it was fascinating to hear about how she was a waitress for SEVEN YEARS before she decided she wanted more and decided she wanted to open a restaurant.  She called her mother up and asked if she could borrow $20,000 to open a restaurant and her mom told her she didn’t have that kind of money.

Then as Suze was working her shift the next day she told a man named Frank when he asked why she didn’t look happy that day.  She told her she wanted to open a restaurant but couldn’t and at the end of his meal and discussions with a bunch of other men he was with he handed her checks totally $50,000!

The story goes on to where she lost all of the money to an unscrupulous investor who lead her wrong, and then ending up working for the institution that lost her money and suing them while she worked for them!

Anyway, this just tells us that even though she’s rich now, Suze Orman knows money troubles, and she just has an awesome way of being true and effective.

Pop on over to her site to see if she’ll be visiting a town near you, it would be awesome to see her live:

Tax Time, Again?

Alpine Village Family March 8th, 2007

Is it almost tax time again?  I know here in Canada taxes are due on April 30th, and in the US they are due a little earlier than that, right?

For last year my business grew a bit but I have no real system to keep my recipes, invoices and payments in order so that I can easily and quickly look them up.  This year, in fact maybe this weekend, I’m having a friend help me set up the Pro version of Quickbooks so for next year it’s all there at my fingertips.  I just hate the feeling of having to sort through and figure out where everything is supposed to fit.

I was considering hiring a bookkeeper but I think my business is just too small yet to pay for such an expense, maybe next year!

Do you have any tax time tips?

The Amazing Shrinking Mom

Alpine Village Family March 7th, 2007

Reading blogs is so much fun.  Hearing opinions and perspectives from other people is such a great way to expand your own perspective.

The Amazing Shrinking Mom is a blog by Melodee Helms.  There is a post that I really enjoyed entitled “My Back-Stabbing So-Called Friend” that really eloquently puts into words what a lot of people might be feeling.

Pop over and have a read, then come back and post your thoughts.  :)

Need More Time?

Alpine Village Family March 6th, 2007

A little while ago Alice Seba came out with a great guide called ‘Hot Mama Makeover’ and it went into some great detail how we, as moms, can take better care of ourselves and have a lot more confidence after doing so.

Alice said she got a lot of feedback from moms wanting to get some help on how to find the time to get yourself in top ‘hot mama’ shape.  That’s why she created “Find The Time Mama”.  It’s another great free guide you can download right now by visiting the site:

Wedding Rings Can Talk

Alpine Village Family March 5th, 2007

I had no idea you could engrave so much on a wedding ring.  I came across this site with lots of vows that can be engraved on rings for men and women.  You just pick out your vow, verse, quotation or poem right online and it’s shipped out to you.

This is a neat way to do something different when you get married.  You can pick out a vow or verse that really means something to you and your fiance.

Some of the verses were just funny, like:

“Keep Your ring on! Paying alimony is like paying installments on a car after you’ve wrecked it.”
“As we slide down the bannister of life, May the splinters never point the wrong way.”
“Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, and half-shut afterwards. ~ Benjamin Franklin ”

Well not very romantic but hey, maybe perfect for someone!

If you want to read more or see the rings the site is here: Wedding Vow Rings

Worried About Using Your Credit Card Online?

Alpine Village Family March 3rd, 2007

I thought this post over at Kristine McKindley’s blog was pretty interesting, called Where does credit card fraud take place?

I think a lot of people are afraid of buying stuff online because they think their credit card information isn’t safe.  But according to the data Kristine quotes only 4% of credit card fraud comes from online purchases, and 8% from computer viruses or hackers.

38% percent comes from lost or stolen wallet, cheques or credit cards.  Kristine suggests that the biggest way to prevent credit card fraud would then be to reduce the number of cards you carry on you at any time, good advice!

And good news for those of us who like to shop online!

Moms and Weight

Alpine Village Family March 2nd, 2007

It seems like a constant struggle for so many moms.  Juggling so many things like housekeeping, mom, wife, cook leaves little time for us to think about ourselves and take care of our own bodies.

Weight Loss For Moms is a new site just for moms who are trying to lose weight.  Check it out.
